You might not know this, but a lot of Star Wars scenes were filmed in Europe. When contemplating the diversity of landscapes across Europe, it’s no surprise Europe became a source of inspiration for the many planets that populate the Star Wars franchise. Here are a few locations to visit if you want to immerse yourself in the universe of your favourite jedi.
Finse, Norway
Some of the most famous scenes in the franchise occur on the icy planet of Hoth, notably the Battle of Hoth. Thankfully, you can visit this planet with no intergalactic travel required: simply head to Finse in Norway. You probably won’t encounter Rebel or Imperial Forces, but nothing will stop you from re-enacting your favourite scenes from Episode V.
Skelling Michael, Ireland
If you’re more of a fan of the latest trilogy than the original trilogy, Skeeling Michael, as featured in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi as the planet where Luke Skywalker is hiding out when Rey finds him, is for you. And, if you’re lucky, you might be able to harvest your own blue milk.
Mount Etna, Italy
While it may be controversial, there is no scene as well known as the battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin on Mustafar when they are surrounded by lava. While that scene was filmed in a studio and the lava was created through CGI, Mount Etna in Italy erupted during the filming of that movie and film crews were sent to Italy to film the rivers of lava - footage which can be seen in the movie and was used to inspire the atmosphere of the scene.
Villa del Balbianello, Italy
While Star Wars is famous for its battles, it is also famous (or infamous) for its love story between Anakin and Padme. The scene where they are secretly married was filmed on a balcony overlooking Lake Como in Villa del Balbianello, near Milan, Italy. The villa can be rented for weddings if you want to live your Star Wars wedding fantasy. Although things did not end well for Anakin and Padme…
So now you know you do not need to hop into the Millenium Falcon and travel far, far away to visit some of your favourite Star Wars locations. With a short trip somewhere in Europe and a bit of imagination, you can immerse yourself in your favourite movies. And, don’t forget your lightsaber!
