Spring is here and it’s a perfect time for hiking. Longer, sunnier days mean more time to get outside and enjoy the reawakening of nature and the incredible spring flowers. Spring weather can be ideal for hiking as it’s not too warm. However, spring also brings rain and, where there is rain, there is mud. But don’t let the mud deter you from hiking! By following a few simple tips, you’ll barely notice it’s there. Plan your Hike Consider going for your hike earlier in the day when the mud hasn’t warmed up and you’ll find it a little easier to walk with the mud a little harder. And if you can find out which direction your hiking trail faces, choose south-facing trails as north-facing trails take longer to dry out. As for gear, some people like to use hiking or trekking poles for balance, but they also offer other benefits such as improved posture, additional power and endurance when walking uphill, and knee protection when walking down steep trails.

Wear appropriate footwear

The next tip to hike in muddy conditions is to make sure you are wearing the right shoes. You should wear shoes that are waterproof, have good traction, and that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. Waterproof shoes will prevent your feet from getting wet and shoes with good traction will ensure that you don’t slip and fall in the mud. If you think conditions will be extra muddy, you may also want to consider using gaiters. Walk carefully

Mud tends to make everything slippery so walk carefully and with shorter steps to make sure you don’t trip or slip. Taking your time is even more important if climbing up and down hill, so take your time to avoid falling. Slowing down will not only keep you safe and mud-free but it will also give you an opportunity to truly enjoy the landscape around you. Bring everything you need for during AND after your hike

It’s a good idea to bring equipment for after your hike. You might want to bring another pair of shoes to avoid wearing your muddy boots in the car. Tip: put a cardboard box in your trunk to place your dirty boots in after a hike and avoid getting mud everywhere! You might also want to bring fresh socks in case your feet get wet. Another useful thing to bring is a towel to wipe down your shoes if you’re keeping them on, your equipment (trekking poles, backpacks, raincoats, etc.), or your dog, who is sure to get extra muddy!

Spring hikes in Europe are a great source of joy. Feel the warmer breeze that indicates that winter is truly over. Admire the daffodils, tulips, and blossoms. Spend some time outside after months of waiting out the cold. With a bit of preparation, the mud won’t be able to stop you from doing all these things!
