For all the Outlander Enthusiasts out there, you will be happy to learn that there are many film locations you can visit while traveling around Scotland. While my husband and I toured the country in 2018, we took the time to visit a lot of the more famous filming locations. Here are six of my favorite filming locations.
Falkland
This quaint town is where Claire’s story begins as the 1940’s Inverness. It is the perfect place to relax, enjoy a beverage or a meal while feeling like you’ve travelled into your favorite story. If you want, you can even stay at the guesthouse featured in the show, which overlooks the Bruce Fountain.
Doune Castle
Doune Castle, or better known to fans as Castle Leoch is a 14th–century castle and is used as the fictional home of Colum Mackenzie and his clan. Do not forget to grab an audio guide! While you tour the castle and the grounds, you won't want to miss Sam Heughan’s narration and stories. Although he only introduces a few locations, he does have extra clips about how he learned Gaelic for the role, and it adds a nice touch to the tour.
Culross
Culross is a charming village that stands in for Cranesmuir, the home of Geillis Duncan. Close to the water, with its white-walled houses and steep cobbled streets, Culross is a picturesque village. If it is not too far out of your way, I highly recommend taking an hour or two to walk the streets, enjoy the scenery and even visit the Abbey.
Midhope Castle
Also known as Lallybroch, Midhope castle is a 15th century castle that stands in for Jamie’s home. While the exterior is intact, the inside is completely dilapidated. When we went to visit, all that was required was a special vehicle pass from Hopetoun Estate. It was quiet and dreamy.
Linlithgow Palace
This 15th century palace served as Wentworth Prison for the show. It is actually much nicer in real life and is where Mary Queen of Scots was born. In the summer, local youth put on a fantastic tour that you won't want to miss.
Blackness Castle
This fortress doubles as Fort William, Where Jamie is flogged in season one. Blackness Castle is shaped like a boat, hence its nickname “the ship that never sailed” and has an interesting history.
